Creating an Acne Diet that Works for You

by on 2009/09/28

An acne diet sounds like a wonderful idea. Most importantly, who hasn't heard that eating chocolate gives you zits? I believe we all have. So it doesn't seem so crazy that by watching what you eat could prevent a break out.

However, an acne diet can be a hard thing to develop. This is very personal and its based on your body's unique response to certain foods. Progress, for the most part, will be trial and error. Make sure you are keeping an eye on your skin. Write it all down. You could even take pictures a few times a week. At the time your skin clears stick the diet plan you were following.

Here are some guidelines to get you started on an acne diet:

* You need to increase your protein - Some dermatologists believe that protein is associated with clearer skin. The reason for this belief is because protein has an enzyme that will limit the production of oils. Oily skin seems to be extremely prone to breakouts.

* Don't eat carbs - You do not need to cut out carbs completely. But you do need to limit them so that they are only about 40 percent of your diet. This is because compounds in carbohydrates can stimulate oil production. This is why so many people think that junk food causes acne. Actually it is just that junk food is high in carbs.

* Consume green tea - If possible, drink the real stuff. Brewing the green tea is the best way to drink it. However, if you really don't like it, then try the natural green tea drinks. Green tea limits androgen production. Androgen is a hormone that can cause breakouts.

* 4. Limit your salt intake - Most salt contains iodine. This is the reason why you hear table salt called “iodized salt.” Iodine is a major inflammatory agent in those with acne.

You must watch your diet and what you put on your face. If you have acne you are probably already more aware than most people of the ingredients in your beauty products. Use oil free moisturizers and organic skin care products. These are least likely to cause a breakout. If you wear makeup, then consider investing in mineral makeup. Many dermatologists today believe that mineral makeup can really reduce breakouts and increase the results of your acne diet.
